In this episode, we taste a wine that has won double gold at the New York International Wine Competition in 2020 – Campo Viejo’s Rioja Gran Reserva – so our expectations are high!
This wine as a Gran Reserva has been aged for at least 5 years, with at least 2 of them in oak casks.
The vineyard suggests you can taste hints of coffee, chocolate and tobacco – what will we find?
The colour is a deep burgundy with a hint of brown giving it that “aged” look!
On the nose, John M got a hint of chocolate and vanilla but we couldn’t detect any tobacco or leather that you often get with Rioja.
This is much better than some of the Riojas we have recently tried.
The taste is typical for a Rioja, but at a cost of £16, we were not sure it really stood up to other wines at this price.
Indeed, we have tasted wines at around £8 and £10 which tasted as good or perhaps even better.
So, we are out of step with the New York judges but we can only say it as we taste it!
