In this episode we taste another Hacienda Don Hernan Rioja, but this time a Reserva Rioja.
To be classed as a Reserva Rioja the wine must first be aged for at least 3 years prior to sale.
This will normally increase the intensity and complexity of the flavour while helping to smooth off any rough edges the wine may have.
The colour is quite deep but to John M’s disappointment, it did not have the purple rim so often witnessed in Reserva Riojas.
The nose, or smell, was much better than many of the Riojas we have reviewed recently, it was very pleasant, so pleasant in fact that John wanted to have an intimate moment with it!
John L was able to detect leather and tobacco.
Taste-wise the wine tasted as one would hope a Rioja would!
Whilst the tannins are strong the flavour can cope with them.
This Reserva Rioja is only £2.00 more expensive than this labels normal Rioja (which we reviewed in Episode 337) at £11.99 compared to £9.99 but the £2.00 is well worth it for the extra quality you receive.
John M suggested pairing this wine with Cave Aged Gruyere Cheese from Switzerland, while John L a Sunday Roast Beef Dinner or a Chateaubriand.
